Computer slow downs are not only bad for your system, but also for you because a slow computer often causes unnecessary frustrations and headaches. Listed here are some easy tasks that you can perform to speed up your PC and enhance your computing experience.
Clean the registry
The most common cause for computer slowness is a slow, fragmented, and corrupted registry. Problems in the registry are triggered by large amount of unwanted, invalid and obsolete entries accumulated within the registry, causing it to grow to a very large size. This uncontrolled registry growth makes it unstable, corrupted and fragmented, giving rise to frequent system errors and random failures. To prevent these problems, you need to regularly scan and clean the registry. You can do this easily with the help of a good registry repair tool. A good registry repair tool enables you to:
|
|
Clean and repair registry errors |
|
|
Defrag the registry to reduce its size and consolidate the registry files |
|
|
Take regular registry backups |
Disable
unwanted startup programs
Startup programs automatically load at system startup and run in the
background when your PC is operational. Many startup programs are
essential for your Windows computer to function, but there are a few
that are added by applications you install later on. These programs are
usually not required until you run the application they are associated
with. To disable the unwanted programs, do the following:
|
|
Run the msconfig command and then on the Startup and Services tab of the System Configuration Utility, disable the programs you do not want to load at system startup |
|
|
Delete the shortcuts added in the Start > Startup menu |
|
|
Use the Startup Programs Manager feature (if available) of your registry repair tool to disable unwanted startup programs |
Scan
and remove virus and spyware
Computers may also slow down due to virus or spyware infections. This
is the reason why anti-virus and anti-spyware tools are a must for all
computer users. You must always keep these tools updated with the
latest virus definitions and run them regularly to scan and remove any
malicious information from the PC.
Clean
the hard disk
All of the tasks that you have performed until now, in a way reduce the
load on your computer’s hard disk. To further optimize your
hard disk and speed up your computer, you need to remove unwanted
files, programs, and other information from the computer. You can do
this easily with the help of the Disk
Cleanup tool. Additionally, you must use the Disk Defragmenter
tool to consolidate all the broken and fragmented data on the disk and
further speed up and optimize your computer.

Just performed everything except the registry bit and there is already a huge difference. Removed the number of programs on startup, ran a diskcleanup and analyzed the drive. It was extremely fragmented and took a few hours to complete. But now the PC is responding much faster than before. Got to be regular with these.
